La Madona Rosa set a world record for any mineral sold on Jat Heritage Auctions. The specimen measures 15.5 x 8 inches (39 x 20 cm) and features a core of smoky Quartz that resembles a human form surrounded by a glittering halo of Rose Quartz crystals. In 2013, a Rose Quartz inclusion specimen called La Madona Rosa (the Pink Madonna) sold for $662,500 in Brazil. Elsewhere in antiquity, Egyptians believed the stone could prevent aging. The Romans used Rose Quartz as a seal to signify ownership. Specifically, Rose Quartz jewelry was known to be crafted by the Assyrians around 800-600 BC. Historical descriptions indicate that Assyrians, along with the Romans, might have been the first to use Rose Quartz. However, Rose Quartz beads dating back to 7,000 BC have been found in the area once known as Mesopotamia (today's Iraq). The first record of Rose Quartz crystals were at Mount Mica Quarry in about 1913-1915. Rose Quartz also grows in large specimens in Madagascar, India, Germany, South Africa and several other parts of the USA as well as Canada. Notable gem localities include Alto da Pitorra in Minas Gerais, Brazil, Albany Rose Quarry in Maine, USA, and Pegmatite 24 in Maine, USA. Rose Quartz, like many Quartzes, can occur anywhere. Rose Quartz is much more stable than pink Quartz as it is unaffected by light. Pink Quartz is classified differently from Rose Quartz however, they are often described together. There is a similar, yet rare, variant of Quartz that is sensitive to light called pink Quartz. Rose Quartz has a glass-like appearance due to its microstructure and its pink color comes from impurities of pink fibrous borosilicate. The nature of silicon leads to many impurities and varying microstructures. Second to carbon, silicon has the most bonding potential on the periodic table. Rose Quartz, as well as other Quartzes, get their various colors due to the bonding properties of silicon. Quartzes, including Rose Quartz, vary in microstructure from crystal to crystal and cuts cannot be consistently measured in carats. By comparison, diamonds have a more uniform microstructure and can be consistently bought in carats. Due to the varying microstructures of Quartzes, it is suggested to buy Quartz by LB or OZ weight, not by carats. The microstructure of crystals can also impact how you purchase them as well, this includes Rose Quartz. A crystal's microstructure identifies different features we use to describe them: luster, asterism, also known as the 'star effect', and hardness for cutting. In earth science, microstructure describes how crystal samples appear under a microscope. Other names of Rose Quartz include the bohemian ruby in the US and the hyaline Quartz. Given that, Rose Quartz is identified from other Quartzes both scientifically by its microstructure and by its color. Like all Quartzes, Rose Quartz is a compound of SiO2. Rose Quartz is a macro-crystalline mineral: this means that crystals can be harvested as large intricate raw crystals. Wearing it, meditating with it, as well as keeping it near, is believed to open the heart up to all kinds of love: romantic love, love of family, love of friends, and love of self. Rose Quartz is considered a therapeutic stone. Rose Quartz beads dated as old as 7,000 BC have been found, but the crystal still fascinates modern collectors. Crystals of Rose Quartz should be bought by regular weight and dimension as opposed to carats, due to the varying structures of Quartz. Rose Quartz differs from other Quartz due its pink color, produced from fibrous borosilicate. Rose Quartz is a macro-crystalline mineral, naturally occurring as large intricate crystals. It is a symbol of friendship, a token of beauty and beloved healing crystal. Rose Quartz is the stone of unconditional love.
